I recently had to have a wire put in my breast, prior to a breast surgery to remove a tumor. The nurses explained the procedure and got me ready for it. Dr. Swersky came into the room shortly after. The nurse introduced me to her but she said nothing...which was odd, but I decided that she must be one of those 'down to business' types, and I was fine with that. Then I felt the jab of a needle and jumped a bit because I didn't know it was coming. The doctor was too busy telling the nurses about a medical conference she had recently been on. I watched the needle with the wire go in, via the monitor in front of me. Then I watched it bounce around inside my breast as they laughed about what some person from Toronto had said at this conference. This made me nervous but I decided it was better to keep my mouth shut. The conference conversation continued between the doctor and nurses. I started to feel like they forgot I was in the room with them. Then the doctor, while laughing, pulled the needle out. The nurse on the ultrasound tried to interrupt the conversation prior to the needle being pulled out, but was not successful. She then told the doctor that she did not have the wire in the right place on the tumor. The doctor was not fazed in the least and asked for another needle and wire so she could give it another go. I was horrified that I had to go through this a second time. I can say that if Dr. Swersky had being paying attention to the task at hand, this disaster would not have happened. I left her office with not the one wire I was supposed to have but two, a lot of tears, and a diagram for the surgeon so he would know which wire to follow in surgery. Unprofessional and scary to say the very least.
