Dr Karas performed RK on me in the mid 1990's. There was no informed consent with regard to the known long term complications at that time. The incisions never fully heal leaving the cornea weakened and prone to rupture from even a minor trauma. Cataracts, neovascularisation, astigmatism, progressive hyperopia, diurnal variation etc were never disclosed.

The RK surgery permanently weakens the cornea, leads to irregular stigmatism, neovascularisation, cataracts, poor night driving, loss of best corrected vision and contrast. Especially if the central clear zone is under 3mm. This was below the standard of care. Patients need to safeguard their corneas from even eye rubbing. Cataract surgery becomes unpredictable due to weak and unstable corneas.

The man should have lost his license to practice years ago. He is a money hungry, sleazy, lying surgeon. I had RK in 1994, with dubious results, after he assured me that RK was the surgery I needed and I would have "perfect vision"after the surgery. He had to redo the left eye, calling it a "touchup"which in reality added another 8 incisions to the left eye. Within 2 years my sight started to deteriorate. He claimes that "THE AIR IN CANADA IS TO GRITTY"!!! I became farsighted to an extreme. He did admit that he induced astigmatisms in both eyes with the surgery. He was instructed by the college of Physicians and Surgeons to stop RK surgery in 2006, something that was kept quiet for years after. The man is a menace. It escapes me that he is continuing to practise. Buyer Beware!!!! I hope he reads this and sues me....
