Tina

I was referred to a psychiatrist here for depression and suicidal thoughts. I saw him once, and he didn't change my medication or anything because it was his first time meeting me, but he did refer me to some depression groups at the same location. He told me to come see him after I had done the groups. Well, I was on the waiting list for probably 8-10 months. During that time, they took me off the waiting list because I didn't return their phone call. I didn't know they'd called me and they didn't leave a message. When I told them that, they put me back to my spot on the list. After 8-10 months, they started calling me about new groups. The groups were always during regular business hours and each time I had to tell them that I couldn't make it at that time, either because it was in the middle of a work day and my boss wouldn't let me leave to go there as it was completely unfeasible, or it was during a mandatory lab for one of my university courses. Each time, I told them I can't make it to that one, but my schedule changes every 4 months with each new semester, so I want to stay on the waiting list in case one comes up that I'm able to attend. Not everyone who has mental health issues is unemployed, so obviously coming in every week during work hours would be hard for a lot of people. After probably 6 months of this, I called to again let them know that my schedule had changed and I was available at new times. Well, I found out then that they had kicked me off the waiting list again. This time, it was for good. They said that I'd told them I didn't want counseling anymore. This was completely UNTRUE! They refused to give me my spot back on the waiting list, saying I had to re-refer myself and start at the beginning again. Doubting I would get anywhere a second time, I said forget about it, I'll try somewhere else. I don't know how people are supposed to get help in this system when they make it nearly impossible to do so, unless you have $80+ to spend on each session with a private counselor.
