Royal Columbian needs an open MRI. Patients, like myself, who suffer from extreme claustrophobia, would be so much more relaxed in an open MRI. Back in 2011, I tried getting an MRI at RCH but within 3 minutes, I had a severe anxiety attack while the testing was being done and had to have the technicians get me out of there, despite taking 3 Ativan beforehand. I was so anxious I had to leave without getting a proper MRI done (the few photos that were taken didn't turn out quite right). I have another MRI scheduled at RCH for Friday, January 20, 2017, but I may cancel, which is unfortunate because I can't afford a private clinic and I'm in constant discomfort.

MRI Patient

Very poor experience in the MRI department. There was a gurney in the changing area with gowns and stuff on it, The staff member said, "make sure not to touch anything on there" before shuffling behind it to get the gowns for me. When I came out of the changing stall to put my stuff in the locker, one of the workers was peering at me through the window. Creepy. Then I took a seat and a nurse was waiting outside the washroom. When the door opened, a huge waft of cigarette smoke filled the area. I went to try and use the washroom and was directed to one down the hall, with the staff member saying, "No no no, don't use that one, I think that guy is infectious." The guy who had been taken in there to smoke... The MRI techs were very impersonal and did not speak clearly into the mic when trying to talk to me. The headphones did nothing to protect against the noise, and the heat was unbearable. The whole area had the heat cranked, and in the machine was even hotter. I told them I was burning up and all they said was, "breathe gently, the pictures are blurry" as I lay there sweltering under the gown they had covering me. I have to go back for a second one next week where they inject dye. I'm afraid to come in contact with a needle in that place, let alone go through that ordeal again.
