Concerned patient
I had PRK done this year. My right eye was done first by Dr. Nianiaris. However, my left eye's epithelial layer was removed by a doctor training with him (Dr. Ulate Randall). I'd noticed a change in the person who was doing my procedure only AFTER Dr. R got up and Dr. N said something like "looks good". At this point, I (trying to sound calm but was really scared BUT didn't want to cause alarm during EYE surgery) asked, "Did someone else just do my left eye?" Dr. N said, "Oh yes, I had Dr. Randall here show me his technique. It was faster and I think this eye will recover faster; Did you notice a difference?" I hesitatingly answered, "Uh...maybe it was a bit faster; I'm not sure." I spoke with Dr. N 3-4 months back via phone expressing my concern about this. He'd been apologetic (which I appreciate) and said it's not possible to list every person involved in the procedure. I told him that I felt if there were to be a different surgeon operating than the one who tells me that he'll do it, ALL patients should be told! I wasn't given a chance to refuse Dr. R! I'd researched Dr. N before choosing him, but I knew nothing about Dr. R! I asked Dr. N if TLC could put in the TLC contract that no one besides the surgeon talking to you/signing off will operate, but he was reluctant to agree for TLC. For himself, he said he'd stop having someone else perform his procedure as he "had not realized patients would be bothered by it" until I told him. I asked for this statement in writing so I could have more peace about no other uninformed paying clients will being taken advantage of for training. I've yet to receive anything in writing or a call from Dr. N since this conversation. It may take 6 months to recover. I'm at 5 months. Vision's pretty good, but my left eye's sees slightly dimmer than my right eye. ( I probably wouldn't be concerned if it'd been Dr. N who'd done the procedure entirely.) I want to protect others from going through this; always wondering if I'd see better if it hadn't been done by a strange
