This guy has a massive ego and is clearly not listening when you talk to him. In two months of inpatient care I doubt that I actually talked to him more than 45 minutes altogether. He bulldozes past everything you say and doesn't acknowledge most of your needs/fears/anxieties. He just simply rushes to the easy (for him) way to deal with things and in my case that was ECT at a rate far surpassing provincial guidelines. His entourage of students/interns appear to be mostly pretty women, something I find suspicious in itself. Since he is head of the department I strongly recommend NOT going to Sunnybrook Psychiatry for inpatient help. Sunnybrook itself is not a bad hospital, and they actually have edible food and actually do some real cooking on-site (a rarity these days), but I think it's a more advanced facility for Trauma, Oncology and Heart specialies

I have been through the Sunnybrook psych department fairly often in the past 5 years and use their outpatient services weekly. I used to think that they were an amazing hospital. I'd like to think it still is, however along with the adult ward nursing staff, Dr. Castel has greatly shaken my trust in Sunnybrook's services. To start, he did not follow his legal obligation to remove observers such as medical students (residents not included) from the room upon consent being revoked. Instead, he said he would not be available to see me that day and essentially would treat it as having outpatient appointments. After that threat I agreed to proceed with the audience however these ineffective meetings never lasted longer than 15 minutes. He also sometimes wouldn't even bother to show up and let his resident handle the appointment. Not only was she even less communicative, but this created a gap in the understanding of where we were in the treatment plan. Finally, because my outpatient care team is in Sunnybrook he would not make decisions but instead would make them find time in their already booked-full schedules to come meet and decide. Due to having to do their actual jobs they of course were rarely available leading to no progress, no decisions, Castel putting me on a form 3 though he planned (and did) discharge me 2 days later. He would not even allow a short pass though he felt confident enough to send me home. Overall this man lacks respect for patients, his ability to communicate effectively is nonexistent, is unable to make decisions alone, does not show interest in getting to know his patients, cannot create a treatment plan (I made all inquiries and set up all my own follow up), and does not understand that the most important member of the treatment team is the patient. He is a disgrace to his profession and made me feel less than human while there. The experience during this hospitalization with Castel as my doctor was horrendous and re-traumatizing.
