I saw Dr. Lai for a number of months back in around 2010, and my experience of him was not great. (I should point out first however that I was seeing him because I could no longer afford my previous therapist, who is a psychoanalyst) The very first session when I was telling him about myself, he got details mixed up and I had to repeat a few things because he was too busy scribbling in a notepad and was not paying full attention. Over the period of weeks that I saw him, I was very depressed and rambled on. He became convinced my relationship was the problem, and pressured me to break up with my bf (now husband), even though he was very much NOT the real issue. I was not interested in doing the CBT exercises, and he made no attempt to convince me to do them, or to find out why. In short, while he seemed well-meaning enough, he wasn't a very good listener and didn't seem to think too deeply into anything I was doing or saying. At times he was kind of flippant. Eventually things went completely downhill and he referred me to another therapist (who ended up being much worse than himself).

Dr. Lai is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable MDs I've ever met. He is an excellent psychotherapist and I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Lai is the most unfriendliest, inconsiderate psychotherapist that I ever had the misforturne to meet. I explained to him my anxiety and depression, and he responded that he didn't see any legitimate reasons why I should be feeling the way I am. He was dismissive to my problems and belittled me for having incorrect expectations of what psychotherapist can do.
