In the winter of 1980, as a child in Welland Ontario I contracted bacterial menigitis - the most fatal type, and Dr. Rau recognised the symptoms, gave me a lumbar puncture, put me on strong antibiotics and save my life. Meningecocceal meningitis is fatal and can kill a child in hours - many young kids did die in the 80's. I was truely fortunate to have a skilled, competent pediatrician or I most certainly would have died also. I was in Welland hospital for 18 days indicating it was quite serious. If you have the opportunity to entrust this man with the life of your child, you cannot do better for them. With eternal gratitude (if you are reading this), Lisa bilobram Violette@uvic.ca

From a patients perspective. I had Dr. Rau growing up and I was a very troubled little girl. He did not tolerate bad behaviour. I would have terrible anger and temper fits as a child in his office. But when he walked in I sucked it up and listened (mostly because he was so firm). I revered him very much. I think about him often. I wish I could have done some of my mentorships with him. What an honour that would have been. I really would be so honoured to meet him again as an adult to show him how his patience and dedication has influenced me from being a troubled child to where I am today. I have proven to the system, parents, teachers and pretty much everyone that I have come in contact with... I proved them all WRONG that I would do something great with my life. I now have my doctorate degree and I work with paediatrics too. I want him to feel proud that he did not give up on the tough kids such as myself... I will always respect and honour him.
