He was rather callous to not allow me in while he administered the anesthesia to my 5 year old son. I have always been in the room with my son prior to this. Apparently, despite the fact that I was totally calm and even made a joke (which he didn't even attempt to smile at), he told the nurse that he didn't want an "emotionally charged atmosphere." I think allowing me to hold my scared son for a minute until he was put to sleep would have been a kindness. He also told me that he was going to cancel the surgery "last night, when I heard your son had a cold. But I knew I wouldn't be able to fill the spot that late." WHAT? I was more than a little afraid to go through with the surgery, and happy it was a simple one that only required a small amount of anesthesia.
