Finding a lump on your breast is an extremely stressful and sensitive matter. You would expect that when arriving at a Breast Assessment Clinic that specializes in this area, you would find compassion and kindness in the doctor's that work there. Caregivers that respect your bodily autonomy and respect your decisions regarding your body and treatment. I was not met with kindness nor compassion during my appointment with Dr Reema Alsufayan. I was punished for not pursuing a mammogram. When she came into the room after my ultrasound, her energy was clear that she was not impressed with my choices. She refused to tell me what she was seeing on my ultrasound and insisted on a biopsy on the spot due to not getting a mammogram. When I asked if I could have time to go home and think about my options before jumping to a biopsy, she became extremely agitated. When I mentioned I wanted to see my naturopath and would consider thermography as something I would like to explore, I was met with rolling eyes and anger (huffing and puffing in annoyance). She said that while OTHER radiologists might work with me on that, and they would possibly consider monitoring the lump over the coming months. "I had HER today!" and she would not entertain any of these things. My refusal would be noted, and that was that! When she left the room, I broke down. You could tell the ultrasound technician felt horrible and went to get my husband from the waiting room. It felt like this wasn't the first time she had been so unkind to someone during a difficult time in their life. Once I arrived home, I found out that a friend of mine had a similar experience with the same doctor, and she "had" received a mammogram. I do not want other women to experience what I did today. I am sharing my experience in hopes that I can mitigate this experience for someone else in this vulnerable state. Also, I want to say that if you lack compassion for people you might consider another career!
