Diagnosed my father with Alzheimer's, confirmed initial diagnosis by MRI. Initial prescription states; patient needs to be on one of the three OHIP approved medications prescribed to combat Alzheimer's. Subsequent visit, diagnosis changed, patient no longer considered to have Alzheimer's, patient to be taken off Alzheimer's medication and prescribed anti-depressants. Diagnosis challenged by patients advocate(me), upon review of patients medical history, diagnosis confirmed as Alzheimer's- supported by MRI. Medication changes also challenged by patients advocate, presented documentation from previous visit, stating patient needs to be taking one of three Alzheimer's medications for remainder of life. Upon review of file, changed patients medication back to original prescription. Dr. explained to myself and my father that she would no longer continue to help my father. Noted on fathers permanent medical file that advocate was highly volatile. Doctor stated to patient and advocate,' she didn't need this, she could have taken offers elsewhere and she would not have had to deal with the problems presented by the rural patient'. All in all, not what I expected when I was asked to represent my father as his advocate. Would not wish this experience on another patient or their family.
