CAMH Toronto

Recently while in the AIM program at CAMH - the centre for addiction and mental health - I was assigned Dr Aleem as my psychiatrist for my one month stay in the unit, during which I saw her three times each week. After my initial meeting with her, I found her to be cold and unhelpful and sort of had a 'chip on her shoulder' - not a good characteristics for someone dealing with people with severe depression and anxiety. I spoke with several of the other patients in the ward who also expressed concern with Dr Aleem's treatment. Then I spoke with one of the nurses who said I should speak with the Dr about my issues and give her another chance before asking for another doctor. I spoke with her in the company of another nurse and thought my concerns had been sufficiently addressed so I decided to give her another try. In a subsequent meeting where I was very upset, not only did she not alleviate my concerns as a person who suffers with severe depression and anxiety but she made them worse. I have never heard one positive or reassuring word from Dr Aleem. When things were looking bleak, instead of telling me 'things will get better', 'don't worry - there are other options' or 'you will be ok', she told me that I wasn't working hard enough at developing coping strategies - something I had hoped she as my psychiatrist would HELP me develop, not ask me to develop on my own, though I had put significant time and effort into developing this before coming into the program. Overall, I was extremely unhappy with the care provided by this doctor, as were many other patients in the ward. If you go to CAMH and are assigned her, don't waste time like I did - ask for another doctor immediately.
