Marilyn Crosbie

I am the author of a book about Dr. Harold Jackson Pickup, who, although he obtained his medical degree at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, and practiced for some time in Ontario (about 5 years), moved to British Columbia in an answer to a "doctor wanted" ad in a remote coastal village on the inside passage between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia in 1949. The Alert Bay Hospital Society bought the military hospital located in Port Hardy, BC and had it barged to Cormorant Island where Alert Bay was located. It was a full hospital with two ORs, pediatric, maternity, surgical and medical wards, padded room for psychiatric patients, laundry, kitchen, lab, diagnostic imaging department (X-Ray etc). A First Nations reserve comprised more than half the population of Alert Bay. The rest of the population in 1949 was mostly Caucasian with a few Chinese grocers. Dr. Pickup was held in high esteem by the majority of his patients, as he was an outstanding physician and surgeon.
