Peter Stuart

Dr. Hirtle was my family Doctor for many years when I was growing up in Quebec City. She was always helpful and caring, and even rode with me in a taxi to the hospital once because of a suspected gallbladder issue, which turned out not to be the case. However, since I was in such acute pain at the clinic, she thought it more prudent to stay with her patient until the issue was resolved at the hospital. Dr. Hirtle was a trail-blazing physician for women in Quebec City in the 1950s, at a time when the old Laval University campus in Old Quebec was not even designed with women's washrooms. So she made it through medical school with a strong constitution, and it shows in the fortitude of spirit she has demonstrated with her patients, including myself, whom she stuck by when I insisted on continuing smoking cigarettes, despite knowing the dangers. I quit eventually a few years later, and I can credit Dr. Hirtle's kind and empathetic disposition with finally convincing and persuading me to go smoke-fee. I eventually got involved in senior care and just graduated with my BSW, in large part because of people like Dr. Hirtle.
